Why Hire a Travel Agent?

Yesterday I blogged about why to hire wedding entertainment as opposed to using an iPod or using a low budget wedding DJ. Today we are chatting about why to use a travel agent, or what I like to call "travel therapists". Because lets be honest, they are the closest thing to a therapist. They do all the hard work for you and you get to sit back stress free.

So you have been eyeing that gorgeous resort in St. Lucia but not sure where to start planning or what needs to be done before you go. Do you need a passport? Do you need to rent a car? Are there extra fees to do that dolphin swim you saw online? These can all be answered by a travel agent.

* Agents can save you time. This service is especially relevant if you're extremely busy or place a very high value on your time.

* Agents provide skills you might not find online such as specialized areas, assembling custom tours or using airline ticketing tricks for multi-stop international trips.

* Agents can help solve problems. If your flight is canceled or you face some other problem, an agent can probably find a better solution, more quickly, than you could on your own.

* Agents provide special services to business travelers. Many businesses find the best way to manage their travel activities and budgets do that is to use a travel agency.

Many people, especially those in my generation, tend to turn to technology to do everything. Booking trips is no exception. This is where most people go wrong. That resort you saw on Expedia might not be as wonderful as they say it is. Travel agents have experience and know and maybe have even traveled to most of the resorts you are looking to travel to, so they know what is top notch and what is not.

Hypothetically, if I am traveling to Paris and my connecting flight is canceled but my bags are on their way to Paris without me, I could call up my travel agent and worry no more. This is because I know they will do their best to fix the situation and get me on my way to Paris and also reconnect me with my luggage. If I had gone the online route and booked my own trip, I would be on my own and honestly, very frustrated.

When budget is a key factor of your vacation, travel agents know all the tricks to save you money. Most people think it costs to use an agent, but in fact the service is absolutely complementary. Yes, that is correct, you pay NOTHING to use a travel agent. So why wouldn't you use one? Traveling is complex. There are many details that go into traveling and sometimes it can become very confusing. Travel agents are trained and very knowledgeable. The thing that sets travel agents aside from online sources is that fact that they are there to serve YOU and YOUR priorities.

Why Hire a Wedding DJ/Entertainment?

So the wedding planning has begun, the date has been chosen and the dress has been picked out. What should be on the top of your "To Do List"? A bride usually spends thirteen months planning her wedding. About seven or eight months away from the wedding is when you should begin booking your DJ or wedding entertainment.

Your wedding day is a going to be a once in a lifetime event and should be uniquely special. Who you choose as your wedding entertainment will by default represent you on this special day. Some brides think that using a laptop or iPod will get the same result as using a DJ/band. Wrong. An iPod will not interact with the crowd, an iPod will not change the mood of the crowd and an iPod cannot speak to your guests. Yes, this route will save you money, but in the long run hiring entertainment will make the night much more unforgettable.

Entertainers and wedding bands understand that this is one of the MOST important days of your life. They do not stand up in front of your wedding guests and just play music. They interact, they have fun with the guests and most importantly, they make sure the bride and groom are having fun.

If you wait to use what money you have left over from your wedding budget to book entertainment, you will have the "left over" DJ.

Here are some examples of what you DO NOT want, but could receive if you "budget" on entertainment:

When brides look back on their wedding, the reception is what stands out. You want your guests to have a great time and remember the dancing, the music and the great memories. You do not want to look back and remember that your low budget wedding entertainment forgot what your Dad's name was when introducing the "Father/Daughter dance" or that the wrong song was played on your first dance.

So before you rule out hiring a top of the line DJ or wedding entertainment, please consider these tips. Most brides wish they had made entertainment a higher priority, so with that being said, look in your local area for quality DJs and give them a go!

Uncommon Places on a Budget

Do your travel ambitions eclipse your bank account? Well here is a fix: places that offer plenty of cheap ways to stay, play and eat. Whether you're on the prowl for a perfect beach or a city bursting with culture, these cities and countries deliver big but cost little.
Not all of them will stay cheap in the year to come so if you are inspired to go, do it soon!

Philippines

Bargain hunters, outdoorsy types and the food-obsessed should look to the Philippines. The country's combination of cosmopolitan affordability and splendid nature make it a destination that offers a lot for the money. Lonely Planet recently named it one of the top value destinations for 2014, and according to CIO Wealth Management Research's Prices and Earnings report, Manila has some of the cheapest shopping and upscale dining in the world. For example, a couple can buy a new wardrobe there for about $410 -- seven times less than what you'd pay for similar items in Tokyo. And the average cost of a three-course meal in a good restaurant is a mere $18, compared to about $95 in Geneva or Oslo (two of the cities featured in our recent story on the world's most overpriced destinations).

Greece

Like an ancient epic adapted for modern life, after years of strife, Greece is once again on a quest. The economic crisis that racked the country also dampened tourism -- a serious blow to a destination that depends so heavily on holiday seekers. Now, Greece hopes to be the place that launches a thousand ships, airplanes and trains, all carrying visitors back to its ancient ruins and famed beaches. Beguiling budget travelers with a siren song of lower prices and smaller crowds, Greece's only real question is: Are you listening?

Dominican Republic
Can you afford azure waters and silky white-sand beaches? In the Dominican Republic, you can. While the Caribbean isn't known for its affordability, the Dominican Republic remains -- at least for now -- a bastion of value in a sea of high prices. With service from low-cost carriers including AirTran, Frontier and JetBlue, and air-and-hotel vacation packages from your local travel consultant, the Dominican Republic seems to have an endless supply of affordable options

Mexico City
Two key aspects score Mexico City a spot on this list: You can generally find very affordable flights from the U.S., and once you're there, you can enjoy luxury for a whole lot less than in other major cities. And while that makes it a slightly different style of "cheap," it's certainly one worth embracing, particularly if you're focusing more on maximizing value than on paying as little as possible. According to the Prices and Earnings report, Mexico City is one of the cheapest places in the world to stay in a five-star hotel: The average rate is $210 per night. Compare that to $730, the average rate at a luxury hotel in New York City, and upscale Mexico City starts to seem dazzlingly within reach.

Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is as easy on the eyes as it is on the budget. Stretched across a series of hills, the city is a captivating combination of friendly locals, picturesque winding streets and affordable pursuits. How affordable? According to the Prices and Earnings report, Lisbon's mid-range hotels are the cheapest among the 72 cities surveyed, with an average rate of $80 per night -- a whopping 50% lower than the global average. And Lisbon is also home to not one but two of the properties we featured in last year's 10 hostels too upscale to believe.

Bucharest, Romania
Still harboring the scars of more than two decades under the Communist rule of Nicolae Ceausescu, Bucharest's melancholic edge is offset by its metropolitan verve. And while more and more visitors are discovering the unique appeal of the city once known as "Little Paris," it's still a very affordable destination and a great place to go upscale for less. In fact, its luxury accommodations have an average rate of $190 per night, making Bucharest among the cheapest cities in the world to stay at a five-star hotel. And according to the Prices and Earnings report, Bucharest is the least expensive city for a weekend getaway that includes accommodations, a meal with wine, taxi and public transport, a car rental and extras: The average cost of $370 is a mere fraction of the cost of a similar holiday in Paris, estimated at $1,100.

India
If you can absorb the higher price of airfare to get all the way to India, you'll be rewarded by a favorable exchange rate, inexpensive accommodations, an abundance of free attractions and wildly affordable dining and shopping. Both Frommer's and Lonely Planet named India a top destination for budget travel this year, and the Prices and Earnings report put Delhi and Mumbai at the forefront of the world's most affordable major cities. This is especially true when you start looking at the prices of goods, services and food. However, keep in mind that violence against women has become a high-profile issue, so while a trip to India can be incredibly rich and memorable, travelers should factor safety into their plans.

Sofia, Bulgaria
Mid-range and budget travelers rejoice: Sofia is still a bona fide affordable destination. Bulgaria's capital has the cheapest mid-range hotels among the 72 world cities surveyed in the Prices and Earnings report: At around $80 per night, they are 50% less expensive than the global average. The city also scored the number one spot on Price of Travel's annual Europe 3-Star Traveler Index, with an average daily cost of about $49 for accommodations, transportation, meals, and activities. It's not just Sofia, either; Lonely Planet recently recognized all of Bulgaria as a great deal.

Nicaragua
Every few years, a new Central American country gets crowned "the next Costa Rica" -- meaning it's relatively safe and bursting with natural beauty, but it's not yet expensive and overrun with tourists. This year, Nicaragua is working hard to earn the title. Volcanoes, rainforests, rivers and Caribbean beaches lure travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path adventure on the cheap. But as the term "the next Costa Rica" implies, if Nicaragua becomes more popular in the years to come, it will likely become more expensive as well. Until then, expect to be able to spend as little as $20 per day, or live the high life for not a whole lot more. Note that many see the recent constitutional amendment that removes term limits on the presidency as a potential threat to democracy, but it seems unlikely that there will be any immediate effect on travelers.

Riga, Latvia
Riga remains affordable in part because it's still relatively undiscovered. But that may be about to change as Riga takes its place on the world stage as a 2014 European Capital of Culture. For now, though, travelers can still stay, play and eat on the cheap. In fact, Riga scored a spot in the top 10 on both Price of Travel's Europe 3-Star Traveler Index (with an average daily cost of about $74 for accommodations, transportation, meals, and activities) and its Europe Backpacker Index (with an average daily cost of about $33).

Irish Holiday

With Valentine's Day over and February coming to an end, St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner. I have always loved St. Patrick's Day because I have always had a fascination with Ireland. Ireland just so happens to be one of the "hot" spots to visit this year, so maybe this will be MY year. One can dream!

What makes Ireland so spectacular? It is full of history, delicious food, gorgeous landscapes and home to some of the friendliest locals you will ever meet. Whether you are interested in trying all the tasty brews and food, enjoying nature and countryside or shopping, Ireland has something to offer you.

When traveling to Ireland there are numerous types of places you can stay ranging from a hostel to an ancient castle. Bed and Breakfast style lodging is the most popular in Ireland. From what I have heard from friends and family that have traveled to Ireland, the best advice is to stay at a B&B and rent a car. That way you can explore as much of Ireland as you want!

When looking around for destination facts, I always turn to the Travel Channel. And this time was no exception. I found a article about the top five B&Bs in Ireland. The first one is in Western Ireland in County Galway. To be honest when I think of Galway, I can't seem to get the song Galway Girl by Steve Earle out of my head. Your welcome! This B&B is called Cregg Castle Bed and Breakfast. It is surrounded by 165 acres and you feel right at home just a few miles away from the city. The innkeepers cook you food found on the farm.

Another one on the list is in Dublin. When you think of Ireland, Dublin is usually the first place people think about. It is a bustling city with designer shopping, magnificent cuisine and wonderful site seeing. The B&B is called The Blackstone House and is less than two miles away from the city. Can't get better than that! It is close to Grafton Street which is a shopper's heaven. The B&B is also near the Dublin Castle which is a 13th century castle that was used as a prison. Definitely worth a visit.

Now if food is your thing, Ireland is going to definitely please you! When passing through Dublin, do not leave without trying a meal at the Old Storehouse. It is one of the favorite restaurants of people who live in Ireland and also of those who vacation there. It is Irish cuisine and they feature live music.

Almost anywhere you go you will find traditional Irish food. This includes meat, potatoes and beer. Did I mention beer? Ireland is home to Guinness Stout Beer. You will find it on tap at every pub.

Now that we have lodging and food covered, what about local attractions. Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle, and for a good reason. It is vibrant green and when the sun shines, it is one of the most beautiful places on the face of the Earth. Venture to the mighty Cliffs of Moher. They are located in the southwestern edge of Burren. They are Ireland's most visited natural attraction.

If you are a lover of beer, venture to the St. James Guinness Brewery in Dublin and pour your OWN Guinness. Believe it or not, but there is a right way to pour the perfect Guinness. It is an art!

Check out the full list of fun things to do while you are in Ireland!

Maybe you will even meet a cute Irish man and get swept off your feet!

Let Them Eat Cake

So this year, it is all about the wedding cake! Birmingham Weddings & Celebrations magazine calls it "Couture Cakes". While I am not an extreme girly girl, the word couture will make any girl swoon!

Wedding cakes come in all sizes and shapes, not to mention flavors. I have been to weddings with strawberry tiered cakes, lemon mini bite sized cakes and even an alligator shaped red velvet cake (and yes, that was the groom cake!).

Cakes range from modern, traditional or can be as simple as plain white cake with white icing. The cake is something special on your special day. There are endless possibilities when it comes to deciding on your cake.

A few things to keep in mind when picking a cake should include:
                        1. Do NOT go crazy. You do not want to have a huge cake and end up wasting it if no one eats it. Be smart and consider how many guests you have and determine how big your cake should actually be.
                       2. Try to steer clear of crazy flavors. Your guests might not like "pink lemonade" or "green tea" flavored cake as much as you do and you will end up with more cake left over than you know what to do with. And yes, I have been to events where both these cakes were present. I loved them both, but like I said, they are not for everyone.
                       3. Try to book your bakery around 4 months before your wedding. Having a piece of mind knowing your cake is already ordered is one less thing you will have to worry about in the months approaching your wedding.

I have a few favorite cake styles that are pretty popular right now. The first one being the laced cake. It is a traditional white wedding cake with white (or colored) piping to mimic your lace on your wedding dress. I find these cakes so simple and gorgeous. When I think of a traditional wedding, this cake comes to mind.

Another one of my favorite cake designs is the flower cake. In fact, I think this IS my favorite. Adds a pop of color and overall is magnificent. The bigger the better in my opinion. I love peonies, so a white cake with bright pink fondant peonies would be to die for!

Last but not least, the GOLD cake. This is a popular trend this year. Very Parisian. When paired with glitter and anything pink, you have a statement piece for a cake. And maybe even add some more flowers!

Who said you can't have your cake and eat it too!

Hotel Capstone: Honeymoon Happy Hour

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Tonight, our little team of travel agents, honeymoon specialists, resort reps and media consultant (myself) travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a great event. Even though I am a HUGE Auburn fan, I absolutely love going to Tuscaloosa. Being a recent college graduate, it brings back so many memories. Some of those memories were not so great, such as being broke ALL the time. So this had our team thinking, why not go to a college town and reach out to recently engaged college students and shine light on the fact that they can have fun, romantic AND affordable honeymoons.

With that being said, we are hosting a Honeymoon Happy Hour tonight at the Hotel Capstone. I have stayed at this hotel and attended many events here and let me just say, it is gorgeous! Very modern, inviting and a great place to grab a cocktail with your girlfriends! Our event is from 6:00-8:00 PM and we are providing the drinks and appetizers.

Our Sandals Resort rep will be at the event, so this is a great opportunity if you have been thinking about those great Sandals Resorts but are not quite sure which one it right for you. That is where we step in and can help narrow choices down!

Come out and enjoy a fun, relaxing and FREE event!
